October 2, 2008 - One Health: Antibiotics in Food Animals

With the advent of globalization, vast advancements in medicine, and disease control, the face of global health has changed.  It is essential that health professions recognize the link between human, domestic animal and wildlife health to understand the threat disease poses to people, their food supplies and economies, and to the biodiversity essential to maintaining healthy environments.  This panel will introduce the One Health concept through a scientific discussion about a controversial topic that unites veterinary and human medicine disciplines - the use of antibiotics in food animal production.  We will explore the implications of antibiotics in food animals from business, human health, and animal health perspectives.  Speakers from the USDA, research, consumer and health disciplines will present their ideas during an evening panel, followed by discussion and questions.
