First Tuesdays Lecture Series continues with a look at what’s normal, and what’s not, for breeding mares and newborn foals - Tuesday July 6

[June 22, 2010; Kennett Square, PA] –At the University of Pennsylvania’s School of Veterinary Medicine New Bolton Center, the First Tuesdays Lecture Series offers the public open lectures on equine topics, at no charge, the first Tuesday of each month.

On July 6th, Joan Norton VMD presents Baby Blues: Life saving techniques in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. Foaling season will be here again, before you know it. To help you get prepared, Dr. Norton will offer an overview of pregnancy, gestation and foaling. She will discuss normal versus high-risk pregnancies, and how to assess which type of pregnancy you might anticipate with your mare. Learn how to recognize potential problems with pregnancy and delivery, and how to be prepared for both. Of particular interest will be the ways that a neonatal intensive care unit, like the Graham French Neonatal Section in the Connelly Intensive Care Unit at New Bolton Center, can help both during pregnancy and after delivery. Dr. Norton is board-certified in internal medicine.

Future First Tuesday Lectures include Hoof Balance: An objective assessment for performance with Patrick Reilly, Chief of Farrier Services (August); and No lung, No Horse: Equine Respiratory Disease with Dr. Jennifer Read (September). The series of one hour lectures covers a wide range of veterinary subjects, each one of relevance to the horse owner and caregiver. All will be presented by New Bolton clinicians with expertise in the subject. Says Dr. Rose Nolen-Walston, one of the organizers of the series, “We've had tremendously good feedback. Horse owners and vets have let us know that they found the first two events both interesting and informative. We have a great line up of topics planned for the remainder of the year, and are looking forward to hearing from our attendees about other subjects they'd like to have addressed in the future."
