Number of Faculty in Direct Support of Program: 4
Prerequisites other than being a Graduate of a College of Veterinary Medicine:
One year rotating internship (or equivalent clinical experience) with demonstration of a previous commitment to the study of dermatology.
Description of Program:
The University of Pennsylvania provides a culturally diverse and intellectually stimulating academic environment in the tradition of an Ivy League university. An internationally known faculty provides both breadth and depth of experience in research and clinical veterinary medicine. The university is located in the heart of Philadelphia, a city rich in history, and is convenient to mid-Atlantic beaches, mountains and other cities (New York and Washington).
The Dermatology Residency at VHUP is a 36-month, full-time, non-degree program. The goal of this training program is to prepare the resident for the specialty practice of dermatology via examination and board certification by the American College of Veterinary Dermatology. In addition to training in clinical dermatology and dermatopathology, residents will be instructed in the basic sciences of cutaneous biology and immunology. There is also monthly interaction with the human dermatology program at the University of Pennsylvania’s School of Medicine; residents attend patient rounds and dermatology conferences. As required by the ACVD, a resident research project will be planned and carried out during the training program, with results published in a refereed journal. Residents are provided direction in writing a grant proposal for pursuit of extramural funding to support the project.
The veterinary hospital provides a comprehensive facility for the practice of specialty medicine and surgery, including state-of-the-art research laboratories and convenient access to one of the world’s most comprehensive bioinformatics and electronic journal databases. The School of Veterinary Medicine is a respected component of the University of Pennsylvania health sciences system, which also includes schools of medicine, dentistry, nursing and the Wistar Institute for biomedical research. Photographic, audiovisual and information management support are available and the dermatology service owns two video otoscope/lavage units, a digital camera, double-headed microscopes, and has access to laser therapy for teaching purposes. Residents with an interest in dermatological surgery may arrange special training opportunities with the soft tissue surgery section.
Applicants should be motivated individuals with interest in the basic science aspects of dermatology, in addition to the clinical application of the specialty. There is no emergency service requirement, although residents share in coverage of in-house dermatology consultations during holidays. Rotations through internal medicine and research laboratories relevant to the resident’s research project are encouraged.
Health and liability insurance and a three-week vacation annually are provided, and residents receive a travel stipend in order to attend the annual North American Veterinary Dermatology Forum. Travel support will also be provided in order for each resident to participate in an externship at another institution’s dermatology program if desired.
While an interview is not required, applicants wishing to visit the campus and the Philadelphia area should contact the program director prior to December 18, 2009 in order to arrange an interview date. Interview requests are granted selectively, based upon the applicant’s C.V., letters of recommendation, and transcripts of prior academic performance.
