Description of Clinical Expertise

Dr. Callan is a veterinary internist with clinical and research interests in hematology and transfusion medicine. She is interested in evaluation of patients with bleeding disorders, particularly platelet defects and heritable factor VII deficiency. Dr. Callan, in collaboration with Dr. Reid Groman (Section of Medicine) and Dr. Nicola Mason (Department of Pathobiology and Section of Medicine), has evaluated plateletpheresis as an option for producing a high quality canine platelet concentrate for transfusion. The same team is now interested in developing a therapeutic apheresis program at MJR-VHUP. In addition, Dr. Callan is investigating options for storage of canine platelet concentrate and issues associated with efficacy of platelet transfusions.
