Sports Medicine and Imaging

The Section of Sports Medicine and Imaging is a multidisciplinary group consisting of board certified internists, surgeons, radiologists and exercise physiologists who evaluate the equine athlete. This section specializes in the clinical evaluation of lameness, pre-purchase and poor performance examinations in horses, as well as providing for all large animal cardiac, ultrasound, digital radiographic, nuclear scintigraphic and MRI examinations.
The outpatient group specializes in the evaluation of horses with complex lamenesses and poor performance. Pre-purchase examinations can be performed with the appropriate specialists available as needed. The cardiology group specializes in the evaluation of large animals with cardiac murmurs, poor performance and the evaluation and treatment of horses and other large animals with a wide variety of cardiac arrhythmias. The ultrasound group has extensive experience in the evaluation of all body systems, with special interests in the musculoskeletal system, internal medicine problems, high-risk pregnancy evaluation, and neonatology. The cardiology and ultrasound service has a strong interest in equine, food animal and fiber animal cases. Digital radiology is another hub of the hospital and our section with expertise in all areas of large animal radiology. Nuclear scintigraphy and MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) provide additional imaging modalities for all large animal species with complex problems for which additional diagnostic information is needed that these imaging modalities can provide.
The diagnostic ultrasound, cardiology and exercise physiology facilities are housed in the Scott Equine Sports Medicine Building. The medical imaging archiving and viewing system enables clinicians to view all imaging examinations from anywhere in the Hospital and provides medical quality images for teaching students, interns and residents.
The farrier service is internationally renowned for its pioneer work in remedial and rehabilitative equine shoeing. Glue-on shoe technology and the utilization of synthetic polymers in the construction of limb and hoof supports and braces have become routine components of large animal therapy.
The Jeffords high-speed Treadmill is used to evaluate the performance horse. Lameness, airway, and cardiac problems can be evaluated at speed.
