Internal Medicine Service at PennVet
Information for Referring Veterinarians
Consultations:
The Internal Medicine Service is available for consultations Monday through Friday during normal business hours. Please call the appointment desk at 215-898-5220 or the referral desk at 215-898-1838 (toll-free at 877-PENNVET) and ask for a consultation with our Internal Medicine Service. (An online consultation service is currently in the works!) It would also be helpful to FAX blood, urine, imaging, histopathology, or other test results and pertinent papers from the medical record to our attention at 215-573-6050 or to the referral desk’s FAX at 215-573-4617 with a cover page requesting an Internal Medicine consultation. Please let us know your name, phone number, and the best time for us to call you back, the name of the patient, the patient’s clinical signs/diagnosis/etc., and your specific questions. Messages are checked throughout the day and every attempt is made to return calls within 24 hours.
Referrals:
The Internal Medicine Service schedules new appointments (referrals as well as non-referrals) Mondays through Thursdays and picks up Medicine in-house transfer cases from our Emergency Service every day of the week/year. (If a case cannot wait for a regularly scheduled Medicine appointment, we recommend that it come in through our Emergency Service, 215-898-4685). The Medicine appointment desk phone number is 215-898-5220. It is not necessary for the referring veterinarian to contact the appointment desk—clients can call directly to make appointments. However, it is encouraged and helpful for referral veterinarians to send the test results to the attention of the PennVet clinician who will be seeing the case (FAX 215-573-6050), prior to the date of the appointment. A phone call to the PennVet clinician who will be seeing the case is also encouraged in order to discuss the case prior to the visit. Such communications are welcomed by us and appreciated by the owner so that they know at the time of the appointment that the referral and PennVet clinicians have already connected and discussed their pet’s situation. In addition, it is helpful if owners bring any imaging that has been performed on their pet with them to the appointment (hard copies or digital-CD).
