On-Line Nutrition Consultation Service for Veterinarians
Welcome to the MJ Ryan Veterinary Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania On-Line Nutrition Consultation Service. This service is provided for veterinarians to initiate communication with the Clinical Nutrition Service staff to request nutritional consultation for their patients.

Currently the MJ Ryan Clinical Nutrition Service does not have an out-patient nutrition clinic however we can consult on patients that are being seen by one of the other out-patient services. If you wish to directly refer this case to us, do not continue on this website. Instead, please call the MJ Ryan Veterinary Hospital Referring Veterinarian Services at (215) 898-4218 and request that the patient be seen whichever is the most appropriate out-patient service and that you are also requesting that the Clinical Nutrition Service be consulted as part of the referral.
If you are in need of an urgent consultation, please do not continue on this website. Instead, please call (215) 898-4218 and specify that an emergency clinical nutrition consultation is needed, so that we can be contacted directly.
There is a fee for consultations. If the case becomes a referral to our hospital for this episode of care, part (or in some cases, all) of the fee that has been charged will be refunded to the owner at the time of discharge from the MJ Ryan Veterinary Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. The fee schedule is described below.
You may down load the consult and diet history forms from our web site or request them by fax (Call the Referral Office at (877) PENN VET). The forms and any information pertaining to this consultation that you would like to include (e.g., clinical laboratory results) can be emailed to: nutritionconsult@vet.upenn.edu and/or faxed to Attention Clinical Nutrition Service at 215-573-4617. Please indicate your name and the patient identifying information on any faxes so we can direct this information to the appropriate case.
We will contact you within 48 hours although depending upon the nature of the consultation it may take longer to accomplish all aspects of the request.
This service is for veterinarians only. We are sorry, but due to the volume of requests, and legal and ethical issues, we cannot respond to owners whose animals we have not seen here. Pet owners wishing a consult should request their primary veterinarian to request one on their behalf or alternatively call the MJ Ryan Appointment Desk at (215) 746-VETS to make an appointment with whichever one of our out-patient services is most appropriate.

Types of Consultation
The fees for various types of consultation are described below. We reserve the right to adjust the charges based on the actual services rendered.
General Patient Consultation $25.00
Questions concerning supplements, diet selection for complicated diseases, etc.
Consultations Requiring Formulation or Client Communication $85.00
Requests for weight reduction programs, assisted feeding protocols for enteral or parenteral nutrition, requests to directly communicate with a client regarding questions regarding pet foods, nutritional management, etc.
Home-Prepared Diet Formulation $150.00
Requests for individually tailored home-prepared diet formulation. Includes the assessment of the patient’s dietary requirements, diet formulation and client instruction on diet preparation and feeding management.
