Outreach for Spanish-Speaking Dairy Workers

On April 4, 2009, Penn Vet students and faculty participated in an outreach seminar at New Bolton Center geared towards Spanish-speaking dairy workers. The event, organized by the Veterinary Spanish Partnership and Dr. Michaela Kristula, and sponsored by Fort Dodge Animal Health, gave local dairy workers an opportunity to learn about proper calving techniques and how to address potential calving problems. Dr. Kristula presented a two-hour lecture in Spanish, followed by wet labs to give the workers an opportunity to practice some of the calving techniques. The wet labs led by Dr. Kristula, Dr. Billy Smith, and Dr. Marc Knobbe, with students from the Veterinary Spanish Partnership providing translation and assistance during the labs. The seminar was very well-received by the dairy workers, who were highly interested in the information and enthusiastically participated in the labs.
