Species-Based Research

Our Laminitis Institute
Laminitis, a debilitating and painful disease of the hoof, is a silent killer that affects horses around the globe. Hundreds of horses will be diagnosed with this disease each day.

A Living Laboratory
A herd of approximately 75 Shetland sized ponies is maintained at New Bolton Center under semi-natural conditions. This herd, managed by the behavior lab within the Section of Reproduction, serves as a living laboratory for the study and teaching of horse behavior. It attracts visiting student groups from equine science and animal behavior programs at regional universities, as well as the horse-interested public.
Other Species-Based Research
The Laboratory of Aquatic Animal Medicine and Pathology works with aquaculture producers, veterinarians and others to investigate and assist with the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of disease in aquatic animals.
