Research at Penn Vet Radiology

Structure and Areas of Expertise
The Section of Radiology is actively engaged in research that ranges from basic science to clinical applications to new technologies. Research is an important part of our activity and our faculty is involved in many individual and collaborative research projects. The integration of our section within our multi-disciplinary hospital along with the proximity of the medical school, dental school and engineering school stimulates research at Penn Vet Radiology.
The main areas of interest and expertise include:
- Contrast-Enhanced Ultrasound (CE-US):
- Tumor perfusion assessment with potential for developing ultrasound-driven targeted chemotherapy;
- Non invasive assessment of the effect of novel cancer treatments on tumor neo-vascularization and perfusion;
- Use of contrast enhanced ultrasound to non-invasively detect lack of perfusion to some organs and thereby detect vascular compromise.
- Vascular imaging, using contrast enhanced dynamic computed tomography (CT) or magnetic resonance angiography (MRA):
- Anatomic diagnosis of vascular anomalies;
- Screening of organ donors.
- Pulmonary imaging especially with computed tomography.
- Evidence based imaging – clinical research in diagnostic imaging.
- High-resolution imaging and its application to non invasive imaging of laboratory rodents. The proximity of a research core facility at the medical school, the small animal imaging facility, helps developing collaborative research between researchers at the medical school and the veterinary school.
