Alexander M. Reiter, Dipl. Tzt., Dr. med. vet., Dipl. AVDC, EVDC
Dr. Alexander Reiter is Assistant Professor of Dentistry and Oral Surgery and Chief of the Dentistry and Oral Surgery Service. He graduated from the University of Veterinary Medicine in Vienna, Austria, in 1996 and spent 1-1/2 years in companion animal practice in Phoenix, AZ, prior to commencing residency training in dentistry and oral surgery at the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine. Following a three-year lectureship and completion of a postgraduate thesis study on Tooth Resorption in Domestic Cats, he joined the standing faculty of Penn’s veterinary school in 2003. American Veterinary Dental Society/Hill’s Award given for outstanding clinical, teaching and research contributions in veterinary dentistry and oral surgery. Dr. Reiter has been active in American and European specialty organizations and is a frequent lecturer nationally and internationally. His clinical and research interests include comparative aspects of tooth resorption in animals and humans, periodontal surgery, oral and maxillofacial trauma and oncology, palate surgery, facial soft tissue and bone reconstruction, systemic impact of periodontal disease and oral manifestation of systemic disease.

John R. Lewis, VMD, Fellow AVD, Dipl. AVDC
Dr. John Lewis is Assistant Professor of Dentistry and Oral Surgery. He graduated from the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine in 1997 and spent five years in general practice in Clayton, NC, prior to returning to Penn for a residency in dentistry and oral surgery. Dr. Lewis became a fellow of the Academy of Veterinary Dentistry during his residency and was awarded the AVDC Peter Emily Outstanding Candidate Award in 2004. After completion of his residency, Dr. Lewis successfully completed the examination process to become a Diplomate of the American Veterinary Dental College. Dr. Lewis’s research interests include histological evaluation of feline teeth in an attempt to elucidate the etiology of tooth resorption. |

Dr. Lewis is conducting clinical trials evaluating new treatments for cats affected by oral squamous cell carcinoma and lymph node drainage patterns in dogs with oral melanoma. Dr. Lewis’s clinical interests include oral surgical oncology, maxillofacial fracture repair and lasers in oral surgery and dentistry. Dr. Lewis is an Associate Director of the Mari Lowe Center for Comparative Oncology Research, Residency Director of Penn’s Dentistry and Oral Surgery Residency Training Program, and President-Elect of the American Veterinary Dental Society.

Colin E. Harvey, BVSc, FRCVS, Dipl. ACVS, AVDC
Dr. Colin Harvey is Professor of Surgery and Dentistry. He graduated BVSc from the University of Bristol (UK) in 1966 and then completed an internship and residency in surgery at the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine. He was appointed Assistant Professor of Surgery at Penn in 1969, promoted to Associate Professor in 1974, and promoted to Professor in 1980. In 1986 he was awarded a Fellowship of the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS) for his thesis on "Laryngeal Surgery in the Dog." In recognition of having received training in dental procedures from colleagues at Penn’s School of Dental Medicine and his charter membership in the American Veterinary Dental College (AVDC), his academic appointment was renamed Professor of Surgery and Dentistry in 1990. |

Dr. Harvey is a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Surgeons (1972), member of the Organizing Committee and charter Diplomate of the American Veterinary Dental College (AVDC, 1988) and of the European Veterinary Dental College (EVDC, 1998). He is also a charter Diplomate of the European College of Veterinary Surgeons (ECVS, 1993). He was Section Chief of Small Animal Surgery (1974-80) and Vice Chair of the Department of Clinical Studies (1996-2002) and was the founding Head of the Dentistry and Oral Surgery Service at the University of Pennsylvania (the first Dentistry and Oral Surgery Service to be established at a veterinary school in North America). Dr. Harvey has received numerous university, national and international awards for excellence in teaching, research and clinical work. He was elected a Fellow of the College of Physicians of Philadelphia in 1980. Dr. Harvey has been Board Member (1978-83) of the Comparative Respiratory Society, Secretary (1985-89) of the American Veterinary Dental Society, President (1990-92) and Executive Secretary (2002-present) of the American Veterinary Dental College, Co-Founder (1985) of the International Veterinary Ear Nose and Throat Association, Charter Fellow and Secretary-Treasurer (1987-89) of the Academy of Veterinary Dentistry, and Director (1997-present) of the Veterinary Oral Health Council.
Dr. Harvey was editor of the journal Veterinary Surgery from 1982-87 and editor of The Journal of Veterinary Dentistry from 1994-2000 and has been a reviewer or review board member for numerous other journals. His publications include approximately 70 chapters in textbooks, 130 papers in peer-reviewed journals and 100 abstracts and other papers on surgical or dental topics. Dr. Harvey has written, edited or co-edited five books on small animal surgery and dentistry. His research interests include veterinary and comparative periodontal disease (including comparative microbiology, standardization of periodontal scoring, plus prevention and treatment),the interaction of infectious oral diseases, particularly periodontal disease, with the rest of the body, specifically distant organ and systemic effects, and the utility and effectiveness of antimicrobial drugs in the management of patients with oral diseases. Robert Menzies, BVSc
Dr Robert Menzies is a Resident in Dentistry and Oral Surgery (2009-2012). He received his veterinary degree from the University of Queensland, Australia, in 2000. His first two years were in mixed practice near Melbourne, Australia, followed by a year in small animal practice in London, UK. Upon returning to Australia, he then took up a position in Beijing, China, working for Randwick Equine Centre at the Beijing Jockey Club for a year. The following year he worked in race track practices in Sydney, Australia, before heading to Kentucky, USA, to spend a 7 month externship with Dr Jack Easley. Arriving back in Australia, Robert worked 18 months in an equine and small animal practice near Melbourne, before an extended trip back to the USA and on to UK and Sweden, persuing his interests in equine dentistry. In the 8 months prior to starting his residency, he was employed in a small animal general and dental specialist practice in Melbourne. His ultimate interests are in furthering the science of equine dentistry. He is a member of the Australian, American and European Veterinary Dental Societies and the Australian and American Veterinary Equine Associations.

Kristin S. Walker, DVM
Dr. Kristin Walker is a Resident in Dentistry and Oral Surgery (2007-2010). She received her Bachelor of Science degree from Boise State University in Boise, ID, in 1996 and her veterinary degree from the University of Minnesota in St. Paul, MN, in 2004. Dr. Walker was employed in companion animal practice near Boise, ID, for 3 years prior to commencing her residency training at Penn. Her clinical interests include oral oncology and reconstructive surgery. Dr. Walker was the recipient of the 2007 Academy of Veterinary Dentistry award for her research “Evaluation of Epidemiological and Laboratory Data in Dogs with Tooth Resorption.” She is a member of the American Veterinary Dental Society and the American Veterinary Medical Association. |

Sarah Bonner, DVM
Dr. Sarah Bonner is a Resident in Dentistry and Oral Surgery (2008-2011). She received her bachelor's degree from the University of California, Santa Cruz, in 2001 with honors. After spending two years as a nursing assistant in a veterinary specialty practice, Dr. Bonner returned to the University of California in Davis to obtain her veterinary degree in 2007. Dr. Bonner completed a rotating internship at the University of Minnesota in 2008. Dr. Bonner's clinical interests include evaluation and comparison of jaw fracture repair techniques. She has been inducted into Phi Zeta Veterinary Honor Society and is a member of the American Veterinary Dental Society and the American Veterinary Medical Association.

Bonnie Miller, BS, RDH
Bonnie Miller is a Registered Dental Hygienist (RDH). She earned her Certificate of Proficiency in Dental Hygiene from the University of Pennsylvania School of Dentistry in Philadelphia in 1972 and received her Bachelor of Science in Dental Hygiene from Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia in 1992. Bonnie is a member of the American Dental Hygienists Association (ADHA) and the American Veterinary Dental Society (AVDS) and began her career working in human periodontal practices before dedicating her expertise solely to veterinary patients. With 19 years experience in her field, she is responsible for the organization and efficient operation of the Dentistry and Oral Surgery Service. |
| Bonnie provides periodontal therapy to veterinary patients and participates in the service’s clinical research projects. Her role as a dental educator involves teaching the fundamentals of dentistry to veterinary students and organizing dental continuing education courses for practicing veterinarians and technicians (VetDent CE Associates). Bonnie is also a guest lecturer at Philadelphia’s Harcum College veterinary technician program and an advisor for the Academy of Veterinary Dental Technicians (AVDT). She has extensive local, state and national lecturing experience and has authored and co-authored numerous journal articles and book chapters. Bonnie serves as an independent consultant to the veterinary dental industry and performs dental product research for companies wishing to promote oral health via their products. She was recognized by the AVDS in 1996 for her extraordinary contributions to the field of veterinary dentistry and oral surgery. |

Jodi Kristel, CVT, VTS (Dentistry)
Jodi Kristel is a Certified Veterinary Technician (CVT) and a Veterinary Technician Specialist (VTS) in Dentistry. She graduated from Olds College, Alberta, Canada in 1999 and then successfully completed the veterinary technician internship program at the Animal Medical Center in New York City. Jodi began her career at Penn in 2000, joined the Dentistry and Oral Surgery Service in 2002, and became a member of the first class of graduates of the Academy of Veterinary Dental Technicians (AVDT) in 2006. Jodi is involved in teaching basic dentistry in the form of rounds and wet labs to fourth-year students rotating through the Dentistry and Oral Surgery Service and participates in admission, care, diagnosis and treatment of veterinary patients and conduction of |
| clinical research. She is a guest lecturer for veterinary technician programs at Philadelphia’s Harcum College and Manor College. She also has national lecturing experience in presenting at the Annual Veterinary Dental Forum, the largest national conference focused on veterinary dentistry and oral surgery. |

Jeanette Hernandez, CVT, RDH
Jeanette Hernandez is a Certified Veterinary Technician (CVT) and a Registered Dental Hygienist (RDH). She graduated from Philadelphia’s Manor College with two associate degrees of science, the veterinary technician degree in 2003 and the dental hygiene degree in 2005. Her main goal in accomplishing a dual major was to become specialized in veterinary dentistry and extend this expertise to professionals within the veterinary community. Jeanette has been a member of Penn’s Dentistry and Oral Surgery Service since 2005. She is involved in teaching basic dentistry in the form of rounds and wet labs to fourth-year students during their clinical rotation and participates in admission, care, diagnosis and treatment of veterinary patients and |

Jeanette is a frequent lecturer at local, state and national continuing education conferences and also an instructor on basic dental care to veterinary technician students at Manor College. She also works part-time as dental hygienist in private family dental practice.

Patricia March, CVT, VTS (Dentistry)
Pat March is a Certified Veterinary Technician (CVT) and a Veterinary Technician Specialist (VTS) in Dentistry. She graduated from Truman State University in Kirksville, MO, with an associate degree in Animal Health Technology in 1985. Pat has worked with small animals in general and emergency medicine practices in Missouri, Texas and Colorado. In 2001, she became an instructor for Veterinary Assistant and Veterinary Technician training programs in Denver. When her dog Tony fractured one lower canine tooth and required root canal therapy, Pat developed an interest in veterinary dentistry. She became a member of the second class of graduates of the Academy of Veterinary Dental Technicians (AVDT) in 2007. Cheryl Arthur, Administrative Coordinator
Cheryl Arthur provides all forms of administrative support to the faculty, residents and interns of the Dentistry and Oral Surgery Service and the Sections of Neurology, Behavior, Critical Care and Anesthesiology. Cheryl is also the supervisor of five support staff members of the Department of Clinical Studies/Philadelphia. In addition, she is the coordinator for Privately Owned Animal Protocols. |
