Clinical Pathology Laboratory

Clinical pathology is the study of disease in the living animal and encompasses hematology, clinical chemistry, cytopathology, endocrinology, urinalysis, coagulation, immunohematology, laboratory management and general pathology. We provide services to Widener Hospital patients, as well as researchers and veterinarians in the outside community.
General Information on Sample Handling and Service
- ALL samples must be labeled with the date, patient identification (NBC or FS number) and owner’s last name. Unlabeled samples will NOT be labeled by laboratory staff. Unlabeled samples will NOT be processed.
- All samples must be submitted with the proper paperwork Forms must be filled out completely. Samples accompanied by incomplete or improper paperwork will NOT be processed.
- Pre-operative blood work, including cross-matches, should be submitted as early as possible (no later than 3:00 pm) on the day PRIOR to scheduled surgery.
- STAT processing is permissible only for true life and death situations or for emergency surgeries. A STAT processing fee will apply for EACH test in which STAT results are requested.
Patient results availability
- In hard-copy at the Clinical Lab
- In hard-copy to ICU, Clinic Hall (as applicable), and referring veterinarians via facsimile
- In the mailbox of the submitting clinician for tests performed at outside laboratories.

Laboratory Hours
Weekdays, 8:00 am - 7:00 p.m. (last specimen by 7:00 p.m.; after 4:00 p.m., ICU & ES specimens are given priority)
Weekdays, 24-hour coverage
Weekends, 8:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. for routine samples; after 12:00 p.m., all samples are handled as emergencies and receive a STAT charge.
Pathologist Hours
9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday-Friday.
Cytology submissions that arrive in time to be transported to Ryan Veterinary Hospital are guaranteed same day results. Results for samples submitted after the daily Ryan transport has left will be reported the following day.
