Penn Vet's Avian Influenza Resource Kit

backyard chickensThe outbreak of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) is unprecedented in the United States for its scope – number of birds, number of premises, number of states -- and economic damage to the poultry industry. The virus, a respiratory disease, is getting close to Pennsylvania, detected in birds less than 100 miles from the state border.

Penn Vet’s Dr. Sherrill Davison, an expert in avian influenza, is Director of the Laboratory of Avian Medicine and Pathology at New Bolton Center. The lab is part of the Pennsylvania Animal Diagnostic Laboratory System (PADLS) and is an integral part of the state’s efforts to detect and control the spread of the disease. The lab tests about 70,000 samples each year for avian influenza.
