Oncology is a recognized subspecialty of the American College of veterinary Internal Medicine (ACVIM). The oncology service is dedicated to providing compassionate, efficient, state-of-the-art care to dogs and cats with cancers. The core members of this team are: board-certified veterinary oncologists/radiation oncologist, residents in training for certification, and oncology nurses. Standard cancer treatments (chemotherapy, radiation therapy) may prolong survival and provides an excellent quality of life in many dogs and cats with cancer.
At the same time we recognize the necessity of continued clinical research in order to identify more effective treatments to further improve the outcomes and quality of life in many cancer patients. Secondarily, the knowledge gained from this research will improve our understanding of cancer itself. Clinical research with veterinary patients can provide valuable information that may lead to improved understanding and treatment of both human and animal cancers.
