Special species patients seen at the Ryan Veterinary Hospital include pet birds (excluding ratites), small mammals (excluding monkeys), and reptiles. Both healthy visits and referrals are welcome. The service includes the only ABVP-Avian boarded veterinarians in Philadelphia. During receiving days, both new and old patients are seen. The other days of the week are reserved for diagnostic procedures and surgery. The special species service receives cases transferred from the Emergency Service on a daily basis. We provide wellness examinations on these non-traditional pets as well as specialized diagnostics and care.
Specialized diagnostics include advanced imaging studies such as ultrasonographic and echocardiologic examinations and computed tomography on any of the special species. Advanced surgical procedures are performed by the special species service or are done in conjunction with the surgery service at Ryan. Two of the specialized surgeries that are offered at the University of Pennsylvania include pet bird neutering and radical treatment of rabbit abscesses with antibiotic impregnated beads.
