Dr. Karen Rosenthal received a Masters degree from Duke University
in 1982 and her DVM degree in 1988 from North Carolina State
University. After veterinary school, she did a companion animal
internship at The Animal Medical Center and then a residency in avian
and exotic animal medicine and surgery also at The Animal Medical
Center in New York City. She stayed on as a staff member of the avian and exotic animal service for 5 years. After leaving The Animal
Medical Center, she became the national director of avian and exotic
animal services for Antech Diagnostics. During that time, Dr.
Rosenthal was also the staff veterinarian for the Long Island Reptile
Museum. In 1999, she developed the Special Species Medicine Service at the School of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania. Dr. Rosenthal has a broad range of interests and speaks and writes on
topics concerning small mammals, birds, and reptiles. Her special interests include clinical pathology, endocrine diseases and imaging techniques in special species.
Jeleen Briscoe, VMD, ABVP (Avian)
Assistant Professor, Special Species
Dr. Jeleen Briscoe is an assistant professor with the Special Species Section. Dr. Briscoe graduated from the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine in 2002, completed a small animal internship with the VCA Veterinary Referral Associates in Gaithersburg, MD, and returned to the University of Pennsylvania to complete a residency in special species medicine. In 2005 she became a diplomate of the American Board of Veterinary Practitioners (ABVP)--Avian. She is currently head of the Avian Welfare Committee for the Association of Avian Veterinarians. Dr. Briscoe's research interests include feather damaging behavior and other parrot behavior problems, avian welfare, species of bacteria found on the skin of special species pets, and antimicrobial resistance.
Nicole R. Wyre, DVM
Lecturer, Special Species Medicine and Surgery
Dr. Nicole R. Wyre received her DVM from the Virginia-Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine in 2003, completed an internship at the Regional Veterinary Referral Center in Springfield, Virginia in 2004, and an avian and exotic pet medicine residency at the Animal Medical Center in New York, New York in 2006.
Margaret M. Fordham, DVM
Resident, Special Species
Dr. Margaret Fordham is a second year resident in the Section of Special Species Medicine and Surgery. She graduated from the NYS school of Veterinary Medicine at Cornell University in 1992 and has worked in emergency and critical care medicine in the Philadelphia area for the 8 years prior to her residency. She has always had a strong interest in exotics, and was the assistant veterinarian at the New Jersey State Aquarium at Camden, NJ from 1998-2004.
David Eshar, DVM
Resident, Special Species
Dr. David Eshar received his DVM from The Koret School of Veterinary medicine, The Hebrew University of Jerusalem in 2003. Dr. Eshar worked at the Tisch Family Zoological Gardens in Jerusalem and in private practice in Israel seeing dogs, cats & exotic pets for 3 years. Dr. Eshar completed the internship in Exotic Medicine at the Tufts Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine in 2007 before coming to the Matthew J. Ryan Veterinary Hospital at the University of Pennsylvania to partake in a residency specializing in Special Species Medicine & Surgery.
