Penn Vet's Academic Departments


Penn Vet's dedicated and distinguished faculty members bring a diverse range of academic backgrounds and unique perspectives to their research and teaching. Organized into four departments, our faculty conduct research at every level, from the fundamental aspects of molecular and cellular biology to translational research, clinical trials and human-animal interaction.

  • Biomedical Sciences

    Pachytene spermatocyte with synapsed chromosomes	The Department of Biomedical Sciences at Penn Vet is recognized as one of the premier basic biomedical research departments in veterinary medicine.

    Our faculty are conducting innovative research into the mechanisms underlying diseases that will lead to improved prevention, diagnosis and treatment of veterinary and human patients and is well integrated with other basic, translational and clinical research efforts within the School of Veterinary Medicine, Perelman School of Medicine, the Institute for Translational Medicine and Therapeutics (ITMAT), Institute for Regenerative Medicine (IRM) and the Institute for Neuroscience amongst others at the University of Pennsylvania, and the Children’s Hospital of Pennsylvania.

  • Clinical Studies – New Bolton Center

    Teaching of our future veterinarians plays a large role in this department’s efforts at Penn Vet. Students rotate through the numerous areas at New Bolton Center, including the Hospital for Large Animals, Swine Teaching & Research Center, and Marshak Dairy. This experience provides invaluable clinical training in the diagnosis, control and treatment of infectious and non-infectious animal diseases.

    To understand the nature of disease and its impact on humans and animals, the School's Department of Pathobiology is dedicated to research in pathology, infectious diseases and immunology.

    Located on both the Philadelphia and New Bolton Center campuses, it has not only built an outstanding reputation for fundamental research, but provides crucial clinical services for the School and the State. Furthermore, by offering the very best training for veterinary students, residents, graduate students and post-doctoral fellows, the Department is helping to mold the future leaders in veterinary medicine and in basic research.
