| Dr. Smith received his VMD from the University of Pennsylvania in 1974, completed surgical residency training in orthopaedics in 1979, and was awarded a PhD in Engineering in 1982. In his research, Dr. Smith has applied engineering principles to investigate the musculoskeletal system in both health and disease. His research has included biomechanical investigations of the canine knee, spine and hip. In the spring of 1993, Dr. Smith established PennHIP® (Penn Hip Improvement Program), a cooperative scientific initiative aimed at reducing the incidence and severity of canine hip dysplasia through early detection and selective breeding. In recognition of the body of scientific research in support of PennHIP, Dr. Smith received the Smith, Kline Beacham Award for Research Excellence and the AVMA Council on Research Award for Excellence in Canine Research. PennHIP is a not-for-profit entity of the University of Pennsylvania and Dr. Smith is its Director. |
