Veterinary Services

Section of Medicine
The section of medicine is comprised of faculty, staff and highly trained nurses. The veterinarians are specialists in large animal internal medicine and are recognized internationally as experts in respiratory conditions, gastrointestinal disease, muscle disorders, infectious diseases, ophthalmology, neonatology, emergency and critical care, and neurology. The internists are board certified by the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine and one is also certified by the American College of Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care. Two surgeons in the group are certified by the American College of Veterinary Surgeons.

Section of Reproduction
The Section of Reproductive Studies at the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine, New Bolton Center, provides comprehensive reproductive care for horses, cattle, sheep, swine, goats, and llamas. Our staff and clinicians have over 50 years of combined experience, and our faculty all are board certified by the American College of Theriogenologists. Based at The Georgia and Philip Hofmann Research Center for Animal Reproduction since 1970, we combine years of clinical experience with the latest research and technology. The Section of Reproduction serves reproductive needs from basic to advanced, from natural breeding to assisted reproductive techniques.

The William B. Boucher Field Service
Field service provides routine and emergency health care for local dairy, horse, llama/alpaca and small ruminant clients. The group's equine specialists offer routine preventive health care, reproductive services, and evaluation and treatment of lameness and on-farm diagnostic Services. The dairy and small ruminant specialists offer consultation in production medicine as well as routine on-farm services

The Connelly Intensive Care Unit/Graham French Neonatal Section
Important features that make the intensive care unit (ICU) a one-of-a-kind and state-of-the-art facility are: the ability to monitor all patients from a central nursing station, a monorail to move patients from the recovery pool area or surgery suites to the ICU, an Anderson sling for recumbent patients, color-corrected lighting to evaluate subtle changes in the mucous membranes and skin, water metering, padded floors for comfort and safety, special scales incorporated into the floor to monitor patient weight gain and loss, filtered air in each stall, and complete control of temperature and humidity, providing an ideal environment for all critically ill patients.

The neonatal intensive care unit is designed to accommodate the special needs of critically ill animal patients. Oxygen, medical air and suction, wall mats to prevent injury, and hardware for hanging intravenous infusion pumps and other standard equipment are in each stall. Stalls for mares and their foals are designed so that the mare stays with her foal without disrupting the neonate's medical care.

The High Risk Pregnancy Program manages the mare whose history or presentation suggests potential problems with foaling. This special package includes pre-and postnatal care as well as close supervision of foaling.

Section of Sports Medicine and Imaging
This multi-disciplinary group of veterinarians, board certified in radiology, medicine and surgery, offers evaluation of the sport horse. Services provided include outpatient evaluation, treadmill examination, diagnostic imaging and farrier services.

The C. Mahloon Kline Orthopedic and Rehabilitation Center

The center houses a sophisticated orthopedic surgical suite with special air handling capabilities to help minimize the spread of infection. It also contains a unique recovery pool system where large animal surgery patients can safely emerge from anesthesia supported in a specially adapted raft.

The Moran Surgical Suite
This features a hydraulic surgical table specially designed for extensive movement in two distinct planes, which permits the positioning required to perform technically sophisticated surgeries on a variety of large animals. In addition, the room has several unique, structural modifications for performing abdominal surgery on food animals.

The Raker Outpatient Surgical Suite
This is equipped with state-of-the-art videoendoscopes for examination of the upper and lower respiratory tract, esophagus, and stomach. Non-invasive laser surgery, selected arthroscopic and laparoscopic procedures are routinely performed.

Jeffords Treadmill Facility
The Jeffords high-speed Treadmill is used to evaluate the performance horse. Lameness, airway, and cardiac problems can be evaluated at speed.

Diagnostic Imaging
Imaging techniques include radiographic examination, ultrasonography, and nuclear scintigraphy (bone scan). Each of these modalities permits non-invasive evaluation of soft tissue and bone.

Farrier service
The farrier service of the Widener Hospital is a leader in the development of new technology. These high-tech innovations allow for repair of under-run and damaged heels.

Section of Surgery
The surgeons handle one of the largest caseloads in the world and utilize techniques such as arthroscopy, endoscopy, laser and cryo-surgery. The Raker Outpatient Surgical Suite is designed for standing procedures to facilitate rapid rehabilitation of the equine athlete. The orthopedic surgery suite includes a pool and monorail system to assist in safe recovery from anesthesia and transport to aftercare.

Section of Anesthesia
Anesthesia is administered by board certified veterinary anesthesiologists, residents, and specialty trained technicians. Their experience and expertise includes a variety of domestic and exotic large animals.

Laboratory Services
The clinical pathology laboratory provides 24-hour services in hematology and clinical chemistry. In addition, we are one of three laboratories comprising the Pennsylvania Animal Diagnostic Laboratory System.
