The Mason Immunotherapy Research Laboratory is led by Dr. Nicola Mason BVetMed, PhD, DACVIM (Internal Medicine), FCPP, MRCVS, a veterinary internist and expert in canine cancers. Mason is a Professor of Medicine & Pathobiology, and the Paul A. James and Charles A. Gilmore Endowed Chair Professorship within the Department of Clinical Sciences and Advanced Medicine within the School of Veterinary Medicine.
Mason’s background is an immunologist, but her getting a postdoc at a cancer-focused lab that shaped her career and research interests. Mason focuses on bone cancer in dogs, a disease which affects 15,000 plus large dogs a year—and has remarkable parallels to osteosarcomas in humans.
Her interests stretch beyond bone cancers, and into a variety of other cancers that are being researched in her lab, and beyond into other diseases that may have potential immunotherapeutic treatment options.
Mason also leads
PRECINCT (PRE-medical Cancer Immunotherapy Network Canine Trials), a network of research centers supported by National Cancer Institute’s Cancer Moonshot to work on next-generation immunotherapies on dogs that may one day help humans.
