Facilities and Equipment

The Rosenthal Imaging and Treatment Center (RITC) is a new high-tech, 9200 sq. ft. facility providing state-of-the-art care for companion animals. The hospital's array of diagnostic equipment rivals that of the most sophisticated human hospital and includes ultrasonography (ultrasound), Doppler echocardiography  and x-ray (radiography) equipment to perform such tests as fluoroscopy and myelograms, ERG (electro retinography) equipment to diagnose eye function and EMG (electro myelogram) and EEG (electro encephelogram) equipment to check neurologic function. CT (computerized tomography) CT Scanningscan and MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) equipment is available on campus for further diagnostic work ups.

In house laboratories perform diagnostic tests quickly, and the emergency service has its own laboratory to perform tests after-hours.

The 24 hour Emergency Service, located in the Harold H. Fehr pavilion, functions as an advanced trauma/emergency treatment and diagnostic center akin to emergency units in human medicine. Services include CPR, oxygen support and ventilation, EKG, direct and indirect blood pressure monitoring, and radiology, as well as minor and emergency surgery.  It is the busiest veterinary emergency unit in a veterinary teaching hospital in the world, with more than 8000 patient visits annually.

The Intensive Care unit delivers the most comprehensive critical care available for companion animals.  Equipped with oxygen cages, ventilators, computerized fluid pumps, heart monitors and other advanced equipment, this unit provides 24-hour care for the most critically ill patients in the hospital. It is staffed at all times by a critical care specialist and critical care nurses. An in-house blood bank supplies blood and blood products for canine and feline patients.

The hospital has space for 180 patients.  They are housed in special wards, overseen by specialist-nurses and staffed  24 hours a day. A fluid ward is available for those patients requiring fluids but not in need of intensive care.

The surgery suite contains six sterile operating rooms for soft tissue and orthopedic surgeries and two minor procedure rooms for dental treatment and other short procedures.  The suite is equipped with heart and blood gas monitors and modern anesthesia equipment.  It is staffed by soft tissue and orthopedic surgeons, highly trained operating room nurses, anesthesiologists, and anesthesia nurses as well as students rotating through the service.
