1932-2003

On February 21, 2003, the University of Pennsylvania Board of Trustees approved the renaming of the Veterinary Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania to the Matthew J. Ryan Veterinary Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania in honor of Matthew J. Ryan, Speaker of the Pennsylvania House of Representatives.

Sadly, Speaker Ryan passed away on March 29, 2003, due to complications from stomach cancer. A remembrance ceremony for Ryan will be held by the School of Veterinary Medicine in the fall of 2003 at which time the renaming will be officially celebrated. continued
