Amy Kraus, V’19, was one of eight students from across the United States to receive the Amstutz Scholarship at the 50th Annual Conference of the American Association of Bovine Practitioners (AABP). The purpose of the AABP Amstutz Scholarship is to identify and support the most superior students in their second year of veterinary school who demonstrate the character, knowledge, experience, motivation, and potential to become outstanding bovine veterinarians in the United States and Canada. At Penn Vet, Amy has served as the President of the Food Animal Club, AABP Junior Delegate, and Zoetis Student Representative. She is an inaugural Commonwealth One Health Scholar and founder of the Penn Vet Bovine Palpation Team. Amy is the eighth student from the University of Pennsylvania to win the $7,500 Amstutz Scholarship since it started in 1996. She will use the money for educational experiences in California, Wisconsin, and Nebraska during her fourth year.
Katie Pruett, V’19, traveled last summer to Cap-Haitien, Haiti, for the second time with a group of Penn Vet students and alumni as part of the nonprofit Pou Sante Amar Haiti. For two weeks, they worked with communities and farmers to help care for their livestock. Over ten clinic days, they performed PEs, gave vaccinations, dewormers, and treated animals with a variety of ailments. They saw over 1,000 animals including pigs, goats, cows, horses, cats, and dogs. The mission of the trip is to positively impact animal health and thereby positively impact human and environmental health; through education and medicine, the group hopes to foster sustainable development in Haiti. This year, they also met with agriculture students and faculty from the Université Notre Dame d'Haiti to help teach local students the basics of veterinary care. Jordan Fairman, V’20, received a Student Scholarship for the American Embryo Transfer Association Conference in Orlando, Florida last year. The conference focuses on the latest research in the cattle industry and how to make further improvements with reproductive technologies.
Souci Louis, V’20, was the recipient of a travel award sponsored by the Northeast US Animal Health Association to attend the 2017 United States Animal Health Association and American Association of Veterinary Laboratory Diagnosticians annual meeting in San Diego, California.
Patrick Robbins, V’20, through research at the Penn Vet Working Dog Center and collaboration with Nestle Purina, published a manuscript in the journal Frontiers in Veterinary Science. The title of the paper is Environmental and Physiological Factors Associated with Stamina in Dogs Exercising in High Ambient Temperatures. In addition to Robbins, authors included Meghan Ramos V’18, Penn Vet Working Dog Center Director Cindy Otto, DVM, PhD, and Nestle rep Brian Zanghi, PhD.
Penn Vet’s team of Emily Egolf, V’19, Amy Kraus, V’19, Jordan Fairman, V’20, and Emily Griswold, V’20, competed in the annual American Association of Bovine Practitioners (AABP) Student Quiz Bowl at the 50th Annual AABP Conference in Omaha, Nebraska, last September. This year’s competition included 24 teams representing veterinary schools from across the United States and the Caribbean. In each head-to-head match, contestants faced off against team members from four other schools to answer questions regarding all aspects of bovine medicine, such as nutrition, reproduction, and management. Penn Vet out-scored three other teams to advance to the semifinal round of competition. Penn Vet’s team unfortunately fell to Ohio State’s team, who claimed the quiz bowl championship for the second year running. This was the first team that Penn Vet has entered in the Student Quiz Bowl competition since 2013.
