One Campus One Health Certificate

Launching in the Fall of 2026, this new One Health Certificate program is a collaborative educational experience that can be applied to address complex problems at the intersection of human, animal, plant and environmental health

If you’re seeking to broaden your educational background and work with others to address complex health challenges, the One Campus One Health Certificate is for you.

    What is One Health?

One Health is an empowering recognition that human health is intimately entwined with animal, plant, and environmental health, as well as a problem-solving framework that drives collaborative approaches to address local and global health challenges (so-called “wicked problems”), such as emerging pathogens, antimicrobial resistance, food insecurity, air and water pollution, health disparities, and the multiple effects of climate change. Training in One Health also prioritizes ‘One Health services’: the tangible contributions that healthy integrated ecosystems and health systems provide to sustain and enhance human and animal well-being.

    Who is this Program For?

This new program is open to all current Penn graduate and professional students. You will learn how to address complex problems that threaten human, animal, and environmental health. One Health in Action faculty will work with students to develop a curricular plan that enhances their skills to collaborate across different disciplines, and synergizes with their main degree program, requirements, and interests.

    Tuition and Aid

PhD and professional students will not incur additional costs for this program. Master’s students may be required to pay additional tuition if a course in the Certificate Program does not fulfill requirements for their degree program.

The One Health Certificate is a customizable, four course program that culminates in a collaborative project to be presented at an annual One Health Symposium.

One Health Core: Enrollment in four 1CU courses, attendance at One Health Seminars

    • A required introductory course: Foundations of One Health that will engage all students and help establish a unique interdisciplinary collaborative community.
    • Three electives broadly related to One Health from different disciplines tailored to a student’s educational level and trajectory

One Health Symposium: Within a year of engaging in the collaboration, students will present their work (orally or via a poster) at the annual One Health Symposium

    Application Process

Applications will open in June and require the following information:

    • Name, Graduate or Professional Program
    • CV and unofficial transcript
    • One page response to a prompt: Identify a ‘wicked problem’ that interests you (e.g. zoonosis, food insecurity, antimicrobial resistance, climate change, access to care, and more). Discuss how scholars and experts can collaborate with the people and communities most impacted by the particular challenge to understand the problem and co-develop holistic solutions. Make sure the discussion and writing style are accessible to different audiences.

A subcommittee of the One Health in Action faculty will review applications and follow up with applicants. Applicants need permission from their program to enroll.

Please contact us at onehealthnexus@vet.upenn.edu if you are interested in enrolling.
