Delivering Exceptional Quality of Care

Supporting transformational expansion across Ryan Hospital and New Bolton Center for the needs of our most vulnerable animals, and for the next generation of students, clinicians, and technology.

To enhance our leadership in providing emergency medicine for companion animals, we will complete the Phase II expansion of Ryan Hospital’s Emergency and Critical Care Center, and renovate our Dentistry and Oral Surgery Suite, both in Philadelphia. We will also offer unique occasions for skills-based student learning by building the Gail P. Riepe Center for Advanced Veterinary Education at our New Bolton Center campus in Kennett Square, Pennsylvania.

In 2016, Penn Vet entered the frontlines of a revolution in imaging, becoming the first veterinary teaching hospital to install a robotics-controlled imaging system for use in standing horses. Today, this technology will become the centerpiece of New Bolton Center’s planned Advanced Imaging and Translational Center.

Leadership Gift - the Gail P. Riepe Center for Advanced Veterinary Education

In July, Penn Vet announced a $5 million leadership gift from Gail P. Riepe, CW’68, and Jim Riepe, W’65, WG’67, HON’10. The gift is the largest of its kind to New Bolton Center and will be used to build a new clinical skills center on the Kennett Square campus.

Companion Animal Ryan Hospital Opens Its New 2.7 Million Emergency Room

A ribbon-cutting ceremony on April 16th celebrated the opening of Ryan Hospital’s Richard Lichter Emergency Room at the University of Pennsylvania’s School of Veterinary Medicine (Penn Vet). The project was generously funded by Richard Lichter, a member of Penn Vet’s Board of Overseers, and co-chair of The Power of Penn Vet Campaign. His gift was made in memory of his beloved Golden Retriever, Cosette.

Riepe Center for Advanced Veterinary Education

Advances in veterinary education and increased competition around enrollment has led Penn Vet to redesign the curriculum. A major priority of the new educational paradigm is to expand and update teaching facilities at New Bolton Center, especially those involving more technological and individual hands-on opportunities.

Thanks to the extraordinary generosity of Gail P. Riepe, CW’68, co-chair of The Power of Penn Vet Campaign, plans to build the new Gail P. Riepe Center for Advanced Veterinary Education are becoming a reality.

Gail R. Riepe Center for Advanced Veterinary Education

The Riepe Center will establish a dedicated space for education at New Bolton for the first time. The new building will utilize state-of-the-art teaching methodologies and technologies to improve the student experience and future clinical outcomes through high quality clinical training. It will expand existing programs, launch new instructional techniques and modalities, and increase connectivity to the Philadelphia campus and the global veterinary community.

The completion of the Riepe Center will transform the educational experience for all veterinary students who conduct their work at New Bolton—expanding student services, improving opportunities to build clinical skills, and offering the most advanced technology in the field. Penn Vet needs leaders who are devoted to the health and wellbeing of animals everywhere and who are committed to the highest standard of excellence in preparing students for the demands of the veterinary profession. With extraordinary philanthropy, Penn Vet will continue to light the way for veterinary medicine now, and for generations to come.

With additional philanthropy, Penn Vet will be poised to fulfill the need for more student-centric classroom, clinical skills lab, small group instruction, advanced technology, and gathering space. In combination, Penn Vet will continue to train future veterinarians to lead the way—in large animal care, agricultural disease prevention, food supply chain safety and stability, and important advances in biomedicine.

Ryan Hospital Veterinary Emergency & Critical Care Center

In April 2019, thanks to the extraordinary generosity of Richard Lichter, a member of Penn Vet's Board of Overseers and co-chair of the Power of Penn Vet Campaign, Penn Vet's Ryan Hospital opened the Richard Lichter emergency Room.

The Richard Lichter Emergency Room at Ryan Hospital more than doubled the amount of clinical space than the previous facility. The 2,000 square foot, state-of-the-art expansion includes designated areas for canine and feline patients, including species-specific oxygen cages.

The Richard Lichter Emergency Room gives Penn Vet the opportunity to elevate animal care in a significant way, doubling the number of patient care areas.

Our Work Continues

Expertise and highly specialized procedures make Penn Vet’s Ryan Hospital one of the most sought-after veterinary hospitals in the world. Patients and their owners rely on Penn Vet for its esteemed reputation, specialized procedures, and compassionate care.

Likewise, the best and the brightest come to Penn for veterinary degrees, residencies, clinical training, and advanced medical research. Completion of the Penn Vet Emergency & Critical Care Center (EC3) will not only accelerate Ryan Hospital’s ability to provide unsurpassed patient care, it will greatly enhance the teaching and learning opportunities in emergency veterinary medicine at Penn.

These critical enhancements will bring all of Ryan’s primary services together for the first time—streamlining treatment processes and the ability to provide exceptional care with improved workflows, increased efficiencies, and intentionally-designed spaces for better patient healing.

Moreover, support will enable the continued recruitment and retention of students, veterinarians, and faculty, ensuring Penn-trained veterinarians continue to provide expert care in communities that extend well beyond Penn’s campus for generations to come.
