The 3rd Annual Elaine Redding Brinster Prize Ceremony and Ralph L. Brinster Symposium was held on Wednesday, March 13, 2024. 
The Symposium was held at the Smilow Center for Translational Research and hosted by the Penn Institute for Regenerative Medicine. The Elaine Redding Brinster Prize in Science or Medicine recognizes foundational discoveries in the fields of biological science and medicine. The Prize is awarded annually to an individual from any country to recognize their outstanding discovery for its unique impact on biomedicine. Dr. Stuart H. Orkin, MD of Harvard Medical School was honored this year for his landmark discoveries of the molecular basis of blood disorders and gene regulatory mechanisms governing blood cell development.

The Elaine Redding Brinster Prize and Ralph L. Brinster Symposium are generously funded by endowments provided by the children of Elaine Redding Brinster and Dr. Ralph Brinster.

Grant Highlight

Dr. Andres Blanco, Penn VetDr. M. Andres Blanco has been awarded a grant from the Margaret Q. Landenberger Research Foundation, in the amount of $200,000 over two years to study “Investigating the role of KAT6A as a differentiation therapy target MLL-rearranged acute myeloid leukemia”.

This project builds on our previous work that uncovered the histone acetyltransferase KAT6A and the histone binding protein ENL as drivers of transcriptional programs sustaining the stemness and proliferation of acute myeloid leukemia (AML) cells. The overall goal of the funded project is to understand the molecular mechanisms by which KAT6A and ENL cooperatively establish and maintain oncogene promoters in highly activate states. Our findings will advance the understanding of how leukemogenic gene expression programs are orchestrated, and will also help determine the contexts in which small molecule inhibition of KAT6A and/or ENL could serve as a potential therapeutic strategy in AML.

After a bout of severe respiratory disease, some patients never fully recover. New research from Penn Vet identifies a factor responsible for inappropriate tissue regrowth after infection, pointing to a possible therapeutic target.

A Penn Vet–led team coaxed stem cells to take on the characteristics and functions of a human adrenal gland, progress that could lead to new therapies for adrenal insufficiencies and a deeper understanding of the genetics of such disorders.

2024 Brinster Symposium and Prize Announcement

Recognized for landmark discoveries of the molecular basis of blood disorders and using the basic science findings for therapeutic approaches, the Institute for Regenerative Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania has awarded Stuart H. Orkin, MD the third Elaine Redding Brinster Prize in Science or Medicine. He elucidated the mechanism controlling the switch from fetal to adult hemoglobin, and reduced to practice reactivation of fetal hemoglobin as a therapeutic strategy for sickle cell disease and other blood cell disorders. Orkin will accept the prize March 13, 2024, as part of the day-long Ralph L. Brinster Symposium.

  • The Department of Biomedical Sciences welcomes Dr. Rumela Chakrabarti. Dr. Chakrabarti, who earned her PhD in Cellular and Molecular Biology from Kent State University, joins us from Princeton University.  Her areas of interest include the tumor suppressive role of Elf5 in different subtypes of breast cancer, the identification of genes and pathways in preneoplastic mammary gland and tumors affected by Elf5 loss, and the evaluation of the pathological role of loss of Elf5 in human patient-derived xenograft (PDX) tumors.

  • 06/17/2015: Dr. Tracy Bale's recent paper was featured in Penn News Today.  The new work, published in Endocrinology, suggests that the maternal vaginal microbiome is one of the ways that a mother’s stress during pregnancy can “reprogram” the developing brains of her children. In addition to Dr. Bale, the study was conducted by postdoctoral researchers Eldin Jašarević and Christopher Howerton and research specialist Christopher Howard, all from the Bale lab.
