The Penn Vet Working Dog Center offers a variety of classes open to the public.

Some of our most popular include:

  • Puppy Socialization – This science based socialization and training program addresses puppy socialization to other dogs and people, introduction and exposure to novel stimuli, and more. For puppies 8-16 weeks old.
  • Advanced Puppy - This class teaches you fun and reinforcing techniques to continue building the bond between you and your dog while building valuable skills that will help your puppy grow into a well-mannered and respectful young adult. For dogs 4-12 months old.
  • Basic Obedience - This class is designed to learn and improve on core skills that will enhance your relationship and give you and your dog the freedom to safely enjoy the world around them. For dogs 1+ year old.
  • Agility – Learn the basics of beginning agility including a variety of jumps, weaves, and contact obstacles. Handlers and dogs will learn the work together as a team as they progress towards running a novice agility course. For dogs 8+ months old.
  • K9 First Aid – The course will focus on the assessment and stabilization of common conditions that can affect working dogs as well as important preventive measures.
  • Fit to Work - Learn strengthening and conditioning exercises that are available to dog handlers to maintain an injury-free mission ready partner.

We have partnered with Capable Canine to manage and promote our classes. To get a full list of our course offerings, or to learn more about registering for one of our classes, visit http://capable-canine.com/training-classes

Citizen Science

Dogs are well known for their elite olfactory abilities, however their olfactory threshold and the use of their olfactory capabilities as a diagnostic tool are largely uncharted waters. The Penn Vet Working Dog Center has several groundbreaking research studies in both of these areas of interest and has opened our doors for collaboration through Citizen Science.

The goal of the Citizen Science program is that after completing this introductory course (Level 1), individuals will have the opportunity to complete Level 2 and Level 3 courses; each teaching the handler and dog new or improved skills for working odor. All dogs and handlers will be taught with the PVWDC philosophy of positive reinforcement and learn how to work a 12 port odor wheel.

Through participation in our citizen science program, you and your dog will help shape the working dog world through research and education, while learning techniques that will enhance your dog’s odor detection skills for sport or work.
