More Than an Education
In addition to student education, Penn Vet delivers consultative, educational, and veterinary support to local shelters and community organizations. As the only veterinary school in an urban setting with a population of 6.2 million (Philadelphia metropolitan area) and thriving partnerships with major shelters and low-cost care organizations, Penn Vet integrates clinical teaching, service, and outreach with the animal welfare community.
With Penn Vet Shelter Medicine Program faculty, Penn Vet veterinary students also play a crucial role in providing individual medical care to shelter animals and helping shelters address population health and welfare.
- At ACCT Philly (Animal Care and Control Team of Philadelphia), students perform spay and neuter procedures on the Penn Vet Shelter Medicine Mobile Unit.
- At Providence Animal Center, students learn about their shelter mission and perform exams and population rounds.
- At The Spayed Club Clinic, students perform spay and neuter surgery on community cats in a high quality, high volume spay-neuter clinic setting.
- With Pets for Life, students perform exams during home visits for Pets for Life clients, as well as participate in telehealth appointments.
- At PAWS, Penn Vet students perform spay and neuter procedures on the Penn Vet Shelter Medicine Mobile Unit.
- Students learn about humane law enforcement and veterinary forensics at the Pennsylvania SPCA (PSPCA) and meet with veterinarians and forensic technicians.
- At Morris Animal Refuge (MAR), one of the oldest shelters in the country founded in 1874, students participate in medical walkthroughs and exams.
- At Women’s Animal Center, students learn through active participation about behavior assessment in the shelter, training, enrichment, and socialization.
