How to Write an Abstract

Title, Authors, and Affiliations:

Make the title brief, clearly indicating the nature of the investigation.
The name of the author who will be presenting the abstract (oral or poster) should be in bold text.
State each author’s name and institutional affiliations (including city and state).
Omit degrees, titles, and institutional appointments

Content (be as detailed as possible within the word count limits):

Length: The body of the abstract should be 250—300 words (the word count does not include the title, author names, author affiliations, or funding information)
Background: The shortest part of the abstract (2 sentences).
Objective(s): Explain the purpose of the study.
Methods: How the study was done.
Results: The significance of the study; the results section should be the longest part.
Conclusions: Should contain the take-home message of the study, additional findings of importance, and the perspective.
Have your mentor read the abstract before submitting.

To fit on the available poster boards, posters should be no larger than 4 ft by 4 ft. If yours is larger, please let the organizer know as soon as possible (Email: kkruger@vet.upenn.edu).

Posters will be displayed in the Hill Pavilion lobby. Poster pins will be provided. You will be able to hang your poster on the evening before and on the morning of the event. More specific information will be distributed to poster presenters prior to Student Research Day.
