    About Us

At the Tomlinson Laboratory, we are focused on understanding the pathogenesis and management of liver disease in horses through basic and applied (clinical) research.

We take a multidisciplinary approach to the study of liver disease, including:

    • Developing and refining imaging tests and biomarkers to assess liver fibrosis, one of the main drivers of liver failure
    • Characterizing equine liver viruses and how they cause disease
    • Studying the molecular and immune processes that contribute to liver disease
    • Surveying horse populations to determine the impact of liver disease on horse health and strategies to minimize risks

Sonographically visible liver area. Liquid paper is used to mark the horse at predefined regions at end-exhalation (inset image). The top markings (red) represent the top visible portion of the liver. Middle markings (green) show the bottom tip of the liver. Bottom markings (yellow) represent the end of the bony ribcage. Visible liver is between the red and green markings.

    Clinical Study Enrollment

With funding from the American Association of Equine Practitioners we are currently enrolling horses with liver disease. If you are able to bring your horse to New Bolton Center for evaluation and are interested to learn more about participating, please contact Joy Tomlinson, DVM, PhD, DACVIM at joytom@vet.upenn.edu.

    Our Research

Liver disease is an under recognized but potentially serious medical condition affecting horses of all ages and breeds. Our research is currently focused in 4 main areas:

    • Viral hepatitis
    • High GGT syndrome of racehorses
    • Hepatitis in donkeys
    • Improving diagnostic tests for equine liver disease

    Clinical Practice

Dr. Tomlinson’s clinical work as a Large Animal Internal Medicine specialist facilitates translation of this research from the bench to the clinic floor. Tomlinson sees and treats patients with liver disease through the Internal Medicine Service at New Bolton Center, and she offers remote case consultations through attending veterinarians.
