Our lab conducts clinical procedures and any procedure will be discussed to make a tailored diagnostic plan for each individual animal.

To book an appointment, contact Emily Daignault-Salvaggio at 610-925-6111 or ewd@vet.upenn.edu.

The benefits, risks, and costs of all procedures will be discussed to make a tailored diagnostic plan for each individual animal. Components of complete diagnostic evaluation for liver disease in horses include:

    • Complete history and physical examination
    • Specialized bloodwork for liver injury and function
    • Blood tests for hepatitis viruses
    • Abdominal ultrasound with special focus on the liver
    • Liver biopsy for culture, viral testing, and histopathology
    • +/- Endoscopy of the stomach and duodenum

Liver biopsies are routinely performed in horses with a low rate of complications. The procedure is performed in a standing sedated horse with local analgesia and a small needle through the skin. Although complications are rare, we recommend an overnight stay after biopsy for monitoring.

A veterinarian examines an ultrasound of a horse's leg on a monitor in a clinic setting.
