Penn Vet’s New Bolton Center Welcomes Dan Martzall as Chief of Farrier Services
Penn Vet’s New Bolton Center is pleased to announce the appointment of Dan Martzall as the new chief of Farrier Services. With extensive expertise in therapeutic and performance horse shoeing, Martzall brings more than two decades of professional experience to the role.
A graduate of Millersville University, Martzall attended the Kentucky Horsehoeing School, one of North America’s premier farrier education centers. Upon completion of the program, Martzall apprenticed in the multi-farrier practice of Chester County Farrier Associates, where he went on to become a partner. After the close of the practice, Martzall co-founded Red Oak Equine Associates in Berks County, PA, where he specialized in the care and shoeing of performance horses competing at the highest levels of national and international competition.
Martzall holds the designation of Certified Journeyman Farrier (CJF), the highest level of certification awarded by the American Farriers Association (AFA). Reserved for farriers who have demonstrated advanced expertise and artistry in farriery, this elite certification signifies commitment to the foremost professional standards and excellence in equine hoof care. Martzall’s clients have included equine athletes competing in world-class events such as the Land Rover Kentucky Three-Day Event, the Maryland 3/5, Fair Hill International, and England’s MARS Badminton Horse Trials and Burghley Horse Trials. He is an active member of the AFA, and his work spans a range of disciplines, including three-day eventing, dressage, hunters, and jumpers.
Martzall’s appointment advances New Bolton Center’s commitment to delivering exceptional veterinary and farrier services for all horses, from elite competitors and working horses to breeding stock and pleasure horses.

Thirty-nine miles to the west of the University of Pennsylvania’s Philadelphia campus is the School of Veterinary Medicine’s (Penn Vet) large animal campus, New Bolton Center (NBC), in rural Chester County.
Nationally renowned for advancing equine surgery and medicine, and with over seventy board-certified clinicians and more than a dozen who are also double-boarded, NBC Hospital’s clinical services bring unparalleled expertise to every case. This depth of knowledge and skill enhances collaboration across NBC’s large animal veterinary medical specialties, ensuring animals receive the most advanced, comprehensive care possible. NBC’s caseload of more than 6,300 large animal patient visits (FY25) offers veterinary students a breadth of equine clinical rotations and equine performance specialties that are unmatched among the 35 veterinary schools.
NBC’s Field Service, the School’s large animal ambulatory practice, provides routine and emergency health care for equine and food animal clients within a 50- to 60-mile radius of NBC, making it one of the many important services Penn Vet provides to Pennsylvanians. The group offers a range of specialty services, including preventative health care, reproductive services, evaluation and treatment of lameness, medical and surgical disorders, on-farm diagnostic services, and emergency services. The Field Service team provided care to more than 22,400 animals (FY25), traveling 183,000 miles in the process.
The center’s campus also includes a swine center, a working dairy, a poultry unit, and comprehensive diagnostic and consultative services that provide valuable resources to the agriculture industry.
