Penn Vet Announces Three New Endowed Professorships

The appointment to an endowed professorship is the highest honor that the University can bestow upon a faculty member.

Klaus Hopster, DVM, PhD, DECVAA (left), has been named the Marilyn M. Simpson Associate Professor of Large Animal Anesthesia. Holly Stewart, VMD, PhD (center), has been named the Charles W. Raker Assistant Professor of Equine Orthopedic Surgery. Susan W. Volk, VMD, PhD, DACVS (right), has been named the Corinne R. and Henry Bower Professor of Surgery.


 

Gustavo Aguirre, VMD, PhD, received the Helen Keller Prize for Vision Research from the Helen Keller Foundation.

Gary Althouse, DVM, PhD, was awarded the Outstanding Swine Academic of the Year at the annual meeting of the American Association of Swine Veterinarians in Denver in March 2023.

Liz Arbittier, VMD, was appointed CS-NBC Associate Director of Academic and Community Affairs.

Linda Baker, VMD, MS, DACVN, was promoted to professor of clinical dairy production medicine.

Joseph Bender, DVM, MS, was promoted to associate professor of clinical dairy production medicine.

Leonardo Brito, DVM, PhD, DACT, received the 2023 CS-NBC Teaching Excellence Award, given to a faculty member who has demonstrated a high level of interest in performing and advancing instruction at Penn Vet. He presented “Advances in Sexed Semen Production” for the animal sciences graduate program at the Universidade do Oeste Paulista, Brazil.

Kara Brown, VMD, was appointed assistant professor of sports medicine and rehabilitation.

Margret Casal, Dr med vet, PhD, DECAR, received the 2023 Lindback Award for Distinguished Teaching. The University gives out eight Lindback awards each year. Award winners are determined by nominations and recommendations made by faculty and students based on detailed criteria.

Sarah Ciamillo, DVM, received a Gretchen Flo Student/Intern Award from the Veterinary Orthopedic Society for research conducted while she was a MARS Equestrian Early Career Investigator in Dr. Kyla Ortved’s laboratory.

Dana Clarke, VMD, DACVECC, was promoted to associate professor of interventional radiology.

Julie Engiles, VMD, DACVP, was promoted to professor of anatomic pathology.

Katrin Hinrichs, DVM, PhD, was awarded the 2022 BoR Most Popular Research Article Award from the Society for the Study of Reproduction at their annual meeting in July. The paper, “Successful in Vitro Fertilization in the Horse: Production of Blastocysts and Birth of Foals after Prolonged Sperm Incubation for Capacitation,” by Hinrichs, Matheus Felix, Tamara Dobbie, and Regina Turner was the most downloaded paper in the journal last year.

Jennifer Huck, DVM, was promoted to associate professor of surgery.

Christopher Lengner, PhD, was appointed chair of the Department of Biomedical Sciences.

Alicia Long, DVM, DACVIM, was hired as assistant professor of large animal emergency and critical care.

Andrew Modzelewski, PhD, was awarded a Searle Scholars Award and a Beckman Young Investigator Award. The Searle Scholars Program supports the research of promising young faculty in the biomedical sciences who have recently been appointed as assistant professors on the tenure track. The Arnold and Mabel Beckman Foundation supports young scientists whose creative, interdisciplinary research will lead to innovations, and new tools and methods for scientific discovery. Dr. Modzelewski is recognized for his research investigating the role of retrotransposons in preimplantation development, reproduction, and disease progression.

Kyla Ortved, DVM, PhD, was promoted to associate professor of large animal surgery.

The Pennsylvania Animal Diagnostic Laboratory System (PADLS), and our New Bolton Center lab personnel, received the 2023 PennAg Distinguished Service Award for diagnostic contributions to the Commonwealth’s agricultural sector.

Kathryn Rook, VMD, was promoted to associate professor of dermatology.

Kotaro Sasaki, MD, PhD, received the Endocrine Society’s 2023 Early Investigator Award. The Early Investigator Awards support early-career investigators in endocrine-related research. Dr. Sasaki’s research investigates the molecular basis of human infertility, reproduction, and endocrinology.

Nicole Scherrer, DVM, DACVO, was promoted to associate professor of clinical large animal ophthalmology.

Andrew van Eps, BVSc, PhD, was promoted to professor of equine musculoskeletal research.

Charles Vite, DVM, ACVIM (Neurology), presented “Optimal Prevention of Neuronal Necrosis and Brain Atrophy in Niemann-Pick Disease Type C1 Cats by Administration of Cyclodextrin to the Cisterna Magna” at the Michael, Marcia, and Christa Parseghian Scientific Conference for Niemann-Pick Type C Research in June 2023.
