Since 2014, I have been studying retinal diseases in dogs using contactless non-invasive in-vivo technologies such as fundus photography, cSLO/OCT and electroretinogram (ERG). I have also developed strong preclinical assessment of retinal therapeutic strategies skills.

With this background, I focus my clinical research in studying how retinal diseases progress in client-owned dogs.

Was your dog recently diagnosed with PRA?

Progressive Retinal Atrophy or PRA is an umbrella term for inherited (genetic) diseases of the retina that causes dogs to slowly lose vision in both eyes.
The retina (layer at the back of the eye that sends the information to the brain for vision) is composed of two types of cells, referred to as photoreceptors. The rods which are responsible for the night vision and
the light sensitivity detection, and the cones which are responsible for day vision and fine details.
Depending on the genetic mutation, it can affect either rods or cones first, or only one of the two separately.

At PennVet, we are now offering non-invasive contactless imaging technologies that will help better define your dog's disease, and provide a prognosis for vision decline. We will also help identify the genetic mutation that is responsible for the clinical signs your dog is presenting with.
There is very little information on how PRA can progress. It depends on the breed and the mutation that your dog is affected with. By performing these tests, we will also increase our general knowledge about PRA in dogs.

This will be a crucial first step to pave the way to treatment for this disease.
