Description of Research Expertise

Dr. Murphy’s research interests are related to environmental contaminants including:
• Freshwater algal toxins
• Lead and mercury
• Anticoagulant rodenticides
• Animal decontamination related to natural and man-made disasters

Dr. Murphy is the primary point of contact for:
• Food Emergency Response Network (FERN)
• National Animal Health Laboratory Network (NAHLN)
• Food & Drug Administration’s Veterinary Laboratory Investigation & Response Network (FDA Vet-LIRN)

Dr. Murphy is the Resident Director of the Pennsylvania Animal Diagnostic Laboratory System (PADLS) at New Bolton Center, the Section Head for the Toxicology Laboratory, and the co-director of Penn Vet’s new Pennsylvania Wildlife Futures Program.
The Toxicology Laboratory provides full veterinary diagnostic toxicology services to the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania including:
• A broad spectrum of analyses for both natural and man-made toxicants including mycotoxins, drugs, environmental contaminants, insecticides, rodenticides, anions, and metals performed on a variety of sample matrices.
• A broad spectrum of analyses for nutritionally relevant compounds including metals (selenium, copper, zinc, etc.) and vitamin E in animal samples.
• Case consultation.
• Assistance in field investigation of possible toxicoses.
• An active method development program for new or emerging toxicants, markers of nutritional status and chemical food contaminants.
