Elizabeth M. Lennon, DVM, PhD, DSAIM
Dr. Elizabeth Lennon is a board certified internal medicine specialist and the Pamela L. Cole Assistant Professor of Small Animal Internal Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania. Dr. Lennon’s laboratory studies intestinal mucosal immunology. Dr. Lennon earned her veterinary degree from North Carolina State University (NCSU), and then completed a rotating internship at the University of Pennsylvania. She returned to NCSU where she completed a small animal internal medicine residency and achieved ACVIM board certification. Following her residency, she completed a PhD in intestinal physiology and mucosal immunology from NCSU. Her research is focused on understanding inflammatory and immunoregulatory mechanisms in the intestine and their application to inflammatory bowel disease and SARS-CoV-2 intestinal infection, to benefit humans, dogs, and cats.

The overriding goal of my research is to elucidate the mechanism of the protective role of the mast cell in IBD. The long-term goal of my laboratory is to discover new functions of mast cells that could be used for design of new medications. Mast cells are ideal therapeutic targets due to their host of unique mediators that are not present in other cell types, but we are just beginning to understand some of their important functions, such as their anti-inflammatory activities.
Dr. Lennon is board certified in small animal internal medicine by the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine. She has a special interest in gastroenterology with an emphasis on inflammatory bowel disease, chronic enteropathy, and intestinal lymphangiectasia.
