Welcome to Penn Vet’s new website; now in the last phase of completion. If you are a member of the Penn Vet community and see an issue, please complete our feedback form.

The core offers the following services:

    • Consultation
Experimental design planning (especially concerning pathological endpoints) and slide review.
    • Histology service
High-quality histology services including preparation of sections from frozen and paraffin-embedded tissues, routine H&E and histochemical staining. Generation of customized tissue microarrays (TMA) from both paraffin-embedded and frozen tissues.
    • Molecular staining platform
Automated staining platform (Leica BOND RXm) for chromogenic immunohistochemistry, immunofluorescence or in situ hybridization on paraffin-embedded or frozen tissue sections and cytological preparations.
      • Additionally, the CPC offers immunohistochemistry (IHC), multiplex immunofluorescence (IF), and in situ hybridization (ISH) staining service through a Leica BOND RXm automated platform. The innovative Opal™ Multiplex technique (Akoya Biosciences) is available allowing simultaneous labeling with antibodies raised in the same species. ISH is performed using the ACD RNAscope® technology.
      • A series of protocols and applications are already available to stain tissue sections and cytological preparations from different animal species. Please, see below for an updated list of working stainings and applications available in our portfolio.
      • If you are interested in using our staining service, please contact us to discuss in detail your request.
      • If we already have working protocols and applications for your target(s) of interest, we will test those on your samples. In all other cases, we will optimize a new staining protocol based on the available applications and your specific needs. For new antibody work-up a preliminary meeting with the investigator is usually requested to agree on procedures and objectives of the experiment.
    • Slide evaluation
Histopathological examination performed by certified veterinary comparative pathologists with a final interpretative report.
    • Mouse phenotyping & toxicologic pathology
Complete necropsy (with gross pathology and organ weight) and histolopathological examination of genetically engineered or test article-treated mice and matched controls.
    • Clinical Pathology
The Comparative Pathology Core offers clinical pathology testing options. Services are offered through IDEXX BioAnalytics.
    • Photomicroscopy
Composites for publication with legends are formatted in Adobe Photoshop to the journal specifications.
    • Digital pathology and Imaging
Aperio VERSA 200 platform for whole slide scanning (both brightfield and fluorescent application) and automated digital image analysis.
    • Training & Education
Complete necropsy demonstration and proper tissue handling techniques. Slides review and discussion with investigators at a multi-headed teaching microscope.
