Above, Scarlett Loya, V’25, traveled with other members of the Penn Vet Student Chapter of the Society for Theriogenology to Washington, DC, for a field trip to the Smithsonian National Zoo and Conservation Biology Institute. Chief Veterinarian Donald Neiffer, V’92, and Dr. Pierre Comizzoli, research biologist and program officer for science, hosted the group and discussed different reproductive challenges and management techniques associated with large and small exotic animals in captivity. Afterward, the students toured the veterinary hospital and visited behind-the-scenes at the Great Cat Exhibit to see firsthand the types of enclosures and management facilities necessary to house different species. Faculty advisors Dr. Patricia Sertich, V’83, and event organizer Dr. Leonardo Brito accompanied the students.
(From left) V’26 students Kiera Zimmerman, Allan Martinez, and Georgia Giannaras, and Eve Neumann from Purdue University, placed first in their division at this year’s North American Intercollegiate Dairy Challenge at the Zoetis-Ohio State Food Animal Medicine Student Symposium. During the challenge, teams of three to four veterinary students perform a hands-on evaluation of a local dairy farm and present opportunities for improvement to a panel of industry representatives.
