Reducing methane emissions from livestock would benefit farmers and the environment. In a first step towards breeding low-methane-emitting cows, Penn Vet’s Dipti Pitta, BVSc, MVSC, PhD, and her collaborators at Pennsylvania State University, have identified key differences between cows that naturally emit less methane than average. Dr. Pitta is the co-author of a new study, published in the Journal of Dairy Science, that identified attributes of low-methane-emitting dairy cows that could be used as targets for selective breeding.

Thirty (30) Penn Vet students enrolled in the NIH/BI Summer Research Program this year, culminating in a trip to Puerto Rico for the 2023 Veterinary Scholars Symposium.
Fully immersing first and second-year veterinary students into all aspects of biomedical research, the program offers the distinct opportunity to work alongside dynamic mentors of their choosing from across the 700 biomedical research laboratories on the University of Pennsylvania campus.
At the end of the summer, students presented their findings at the Scholars Symposium, a gathering of more than 700 students from the United States and beyond.
Daniel Beiting, PhD, associate director of the Institute for Infectious and Zoonotic Diseases, expanded his work in the Galápagos, giving undergraduate and graduate students an opportunity to spend two months on San Cristóbal Island this summer, doing research on antibacterial resistance, vectors of disease, climate change adaptation, and the impact of climate change on mental health.
