Pre-Vet Program

The Penn Vet Animal Model Core & Comparative Orthopedic Research Lab routinely seeks part-time volunteer help to assist with animal care and daily lab activities. The ideal candidate is a mature self-starter with an interest in gaining exposure to the field of veterinary medicine and surgery, translational/biomedical research, and the care of large animals. Large animal, veterinary, and/or biomedical engineering experience is desirable, but not required. Duties include assisting staff with general lab maintenance, such as stocking inventory, equipment maintenance, and animal husbandry tasks; assisting with operating room preparation and maintenance, pre- and post-operative care of animals, as well as handling animals for various veterinary procedures including radiographs, IV catheter placement, and physical exams.

Fellowship in Translational Research & Experimental Surgery

Today’s growing emphasis on translational research means that the need for preclinical and clinical investigators has never been greater. This is where the Animal Model Core and Comparative Orthopedic Research Laboratory (AMC-CORL) Fellowship in Translational Research comes in. This one- to two-year fellowship within the Department of Clinical Studies - New Bolton Center at the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine aims to provide veterinarians with hands-on training and experience in the field of preclinical translational research and regulatory science.

The program is based on a specialized curriculum that enables trainees to gain direct experience in preclinical investigations. Rooted in orthopedics, experience at PSC-CORL emphasizes in vivo trial design, statistical sciences, biomedical ethics, preclinical regulatory principles (e.g., Good Laboratory Practice, 21 CFR Part 58; Good Clinical Practice, VICH GL9), and in vitro and in vivo measurement methodologies. The goal of this training program is to build the foundation for conducting translational research in the preclinical arena using clinically relevant large animal models. By applying contemporary research tools to clinically relevant areas of investigation, participants will establish a basic foundation for careers in academic medicine, industry, and regulatory affairs.

• Fellowships are 12-24 months in length.
