Soft Tissue Sarcoma & Mammary Carcinoma - Photoacoustic System for Identifying Tumor Edges (PSITE)

Aug 5, 2019

The purpose of this study is to determine the utility of a new diagnostic device (PSITE) for the diagnosis of soft tissue sarcomas and mammary carcinomas. The current minimally invasive standard of care to diagnose these types of cancer is fine needle aspirate (FNA), which does not always provide an accurate answer. The aim of this study is to test a new instrument that is designed to obtain high quality biopsy samples using ultrasound guidance to improve diagnostic options for these types of cancer.

Eligibility:

  1. Dogs undergoing surgery at Penn Vet to remove previously diagnosed soft tissue sarcoma or mammary carcinoma
  2. Dogs with a palpable tumor

Prior to surgery (while under general anesthesia), all dogs will have 2 biopsy samples taken with the PSITE device. Samples will be submitted to the Penn Vet lab for analysis.

Owners will receive a $500 credit to their Penn Vet account for participation.

Please contact the Veterinary Clinical Investigations Center at 215-573-0302 or by e-mail at vcic@vet.upenn.edu if you would like more information.
